Looking back: A timeline of how the COVID-19 break has changed our lives since March 2020. 

A lot has happened since we walked out of East on March 13, with the joy of spring break beginning and the darkness of COVID-19 spreading, students had no idea what the next few months would bring. Here is an overview of what has happened since then including school news and nationwide news. 

March- 

13: 26-year-old Breonna Taylor was shot in her Louisville apartment by three police officers, this resulted in many protects about police brutality. 

14: First day of spring break 

19: Donald Trump crosses out the word “Corona” and replaces it with “Chinese” in his notes. 

26: DMPS starts their Meal Program for students. 

April- 

Toilet paper shortage 

People protest stay-at-home orders and restrictions. 

22: DMPS distributes 16,075 computers to k-8 students. 

29: East High School Theatre earns several IHSMTA awards including Outstanding Overall Performance for Sister Act 

May-  

1: East Alumni hand-out college scholarships to graduating East Seniors. 

25: George Perry Floyd Jr. was killed during an arrest, this sparked hundreds of thousands of Black Lives Matter protests across the country and the world. 

29: Omar Jimenez, a CNN journalist, was arrested during a broadcast at the Minneapolis protests. 

30: The SpaceX Falcon 9 takes off from the Kennedy Space center in Titusville, Florida. 

Murder hornets come to the U.S. 

June- 

Celine Da Silva started the “Take Down the Statue of Christopher Columbus” petition on change.org, which now has over 100,000 signatures. This was created in hopes of replacing the statue with a statue of Marsha P. Johnson, a black trans activist. 

DMPS begins baseball and softball games 

Biden became democratic presidential nominee 

16: Donald Trump signs an executive order on police reform. 

29: East High Seniors participate in personal commencements. 

July-  

East softball season gets cancelled because of COVID-19 case 

4: Kanye West announces that he is running for president in the 2020 election. 

11 Trump is seen were a face mask in public for the first time 

25 Hurricane Hanna makes its way through Texas. 

August- 

10: Iowa and the Midwest are hit with a derecho, which was an intense and damaging windstorm 

11: Kamala Harris becomes Democratic VP candidate. 

26: Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie issues a city-wide mask mandate. 

Wildfires erupt from California to Washington 

September-  

8: Des Moines Public Schools begins virtual learning. 

18: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg dies at age 87. 

29: Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden have the first presidential debate. 

October- 

2: President Donald Trump tests positive for COVID19. 

14: Donald Trump held a campaign rally at Des Moines International Airport. 

November- 

3: The last day to vote in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. 

7: Joe Biden becomes the predicted president-elect.
