Cultures worldwide believe in spirits that survive death. Many people, including your own Scarlets, have witnessed paranormal activity inside the walls of East High School. These are the stories of teachers Jennifer Medina, Lowell Long, and Erin Lowe.
English teacher, Mrs. Medina, was followed by a girl with long brown hair. In the year 2009, Medina was walking out of the first-floor main bathroom after a debate competition at East, when she looked over and saw a girl standing down the hall at an open locker. ‘Oh, that’s not right. No one should be here,’ Medina turned back toward the girl, and she was not there, and the locker was closed. The next day she talked to a janitor and asked if anything strange had happened while working the night shift. At first the custodian didn’t want to talk about it, however, Medina got it out of her. The janitor continued to explain how it would come right up next to Medina’s classroom window at night and described the same person she had seen the night before, a girl with long, brown hair. Later that day, Medina was telling that story to one of her classes and a student interrupted her and said “I’ve seen this too! She watches us swim!” To this day, Medina doesn’t know if what she saw was real.
PE teacher and swim coach, Mrs. Lowe, and the active pool ghost. In 2019, Lowe was walking into the pool area during period eight; while walking in she heard the phone ringing, which never happened. She walks into the office and picks up the phone. Nothing. ‘That was weird’, she ignores that moment and walks into the girl’s locker room to fill her water bottle. While filling her water bottle she hears the phone ringing again, she goes to answer the phone and again, nothing. Confused and creeped out, she walks out into the pool area and towards the door near the stairs. When Lowe noticed a student, she went out there and she let her in. The student comes in and says, “Finally, what were you doing?” “What?” Lowe asks, confused. “You walked past me like ten times! What were you doing??” the student asks. Lowe looks at her incredulously, “I only walked past a few times! One when I came in, two when I filled up my water bottle, three coming back from filling my water bottle.” The two had went back and forth for a while trying to figure it out, “Did you hear the phone ringing?” Lowe asked. “No?” the student responded. Lowe continues to question what happened and who her student saw that day.
East High School alum and current substitute teacher, Mr. Long, and the gym ghost. “Back in the day we had to individually turn on the main gym lights. So, it was really dark.” Mr. Long had been the in-room athletic director at the time, and he went in there to turn the lights on, and a huge flash of light went right across the back side of the gym. Long still wonders what he saw that day. A few years later, Long had another experience; he was on the third floor main and the only people at the school were him and a custodian. Earlier that day, Long had asked the custodian if anyone else was at the school, and there wasn’t. When walking down the hall, past the girl’s bathroom, he heard water running from the sink. Scared, Long continued down the stairs, all the way to the custodian, “Someone’s in the building. We need to check,” Long said. The two went back up to that hallway and checked, no one was there, but the sinks were all completely dry. Those two stories stay with Long to this day.
