You may have seen her at a student government meeting, running the track with the East High track team, or giving tours to new students. No matter where you’ve seen her, she always goes out her way to be a leader, this describes East High junior Laila Fisher. Something you may not know about her is she throws javelin with her club track team.
“I tried javelin and I was not very good but I actually liked so I stared doing it more,” Fisher said
When Fisher was in eighth grade, she tore her hip flexor and that made it hard for her to run so she decided to try throwing. She first tried shotput then tried javelin. Both are field events that involve throwing. Shotput is a heavy ball that athletes throw. Javelin is a long, spear-like object with a pointed end that is thrown for a distance. Fisher liked javelin and decided to stick with it a year later after she was healed from her injury. She was additionally introduced to javelin by her track team. Sports has been Fisher’s thing since a young age.
“I started cross country when I was 5,” Fisher said
Sports aren’t the only thing that Fisher excels at. She has also emerged as a leader.
Fisher has set high expectations for herself for next year, she wants to run for student body president and already has great plans.
“My plans for president are that I want more student led events,” Fisher said
Fisher is very determined to make sure students here at East feel more involved and heard, and that is important to her and her friends. And the fact that she and her friends are part of Ambassadors, this helps them do just that.
“We collaborate on a lot of our ideas for the community and just have a lot of fun,” junior Daffney Bolander said.
Both Fisher and her friends are very involved at East and this can get in the way of spending time together.
“Me and my friends, we’re all very involved in various things so trying to hang out outside of school sometimes is a struggle,” Fisher said.
Here at East, Fisher is respected by her peers. She knows what she wants and knows how to get it.
“She is very responsible, respectful and balanced,” Bolander said.
These things are true about her at school and on the field.
“I think Laila is a very underrated athlete. Her slight stature is not what you think of when you see hurdlers or throwers, but she makes up for that with her smarts and her tenacity in being the best athlete she can be. This shows in all aspects of her life and all activities she participates in at East,” East track coach Ken Morton said.
