Kaylee Consolver
Kaylee Consolver is currently a senior at East High School, whom is closing her chapter at East. She will be releasing her role as Co-Editor-in-Chief since she soon will be walking the stage at graduation.
Consolver took journalism her first semester of freshman year and joined newspaper her first semester of sophomore year.
“Originally I was just thrown into journalism my first semester of my freshman year, and then Mrs. Niemeyer had pestered me until I did newspaper so then I joined, I had liked doing it, so I just stayed,” Consolver said
Consolver admitted that she didn’t not realize how much work truly went into being a Co-Editor-in-Chief due to the amount of time she had to put into the issues on her own personal time. Consolver expressed that being an editor did have its downfalls but opened up numerous opportunities from experimenting with new podcast equipment to having the ability to connect with the entire class rather than just some. When asked why people should join the newspaper she stated it was a relatively independent class that gave students the ability to work in a welcoming environment.
“I think I like it because you are pretty self-sufficient, you do work at your own pace. We set the deadline, but you work on your own. It’s a good way to meet people, it not just a class, just something fun,” Consolver said.
As for Consolver’s plans after high school, she plans on moving out and finding a job that seeks her interest.
Beverly Gillard
Beverly Gillard is currently a senior at East High School, whom is also closing her chapter at East. She will be releasing her role as Co-Editor-in-Chief since she soon will be walking the stage at graduation.
Gillard joined newspaper second semester of her sophomore year and has been in newspaper ever since.
“Honestly when I joined newspaper they said I would I get English credits so that’s why I joined, for the English credit but they got rid of that. But also, I love writing, I thought it would be something nice to do,” Gillard said.
When asked how her time was as Co-Editor-in-Chief, she had mentioned how the shift in when newspaper class occurred it created a better way to end the day, where she can decompress form all of the stress of other classes. As for the reason why, she stated during her time as editor she had the opportunity to meet new people and form numerous friendships which helped end the day on a good note.
Gillard’s plans after high school is to attend University of Northern Iowa for social work with a backup of pursuing education, still deciding between both careers but mainly leaning towards social work.
Miley Jimenez
Miley Jimenez is currently a junior at East High School, she still has a year until her chapter will come to a close but in the meantime, she is going to stay around and continue to be a part of newspaper her senior year as well.
Jimenez was in journalism her freshman year, and then later joined newspaper her second semester because of Mrs. Niemeyer’s encouragement and the way Jimenez could write whatever she wanted with the ability to express herself
As for how her time in newspaper was, Jimenez expressed how much she genuinely enjoyed her time in newspaper.
“I’ve had the best time. Especially being one of the Co-editors, I have learned so much. I definitely still need to work on being more social with my peers,” Jimenez said.
When asked what she loved most about being in newspaper, she mentioned how the students are very close and have formed a strong relationship, a welcoming environment.
“I love the fact that the Scroll staff is basically a family,” Jimenez said.
Jimenez would recommend newspaper to everyone, as for why, she expresses how newspaper is a good opportunity for everyone but also how it has positively affected her personally.
“I would recommend it to anyone who is opening to expressing themselves. For me personally it is a time where I can focus on what I’m writing, and I forget about the outside world,” Jimenez said.
