Since the start of the 2023-2024
school year, DMPS has implemented a
new fight policy to deter students from
getting into physical altercations. This is
because of the high number of altercations within the past couple of years.
This policy was implemented to help
keep you and everyone else around you
safe to enjoy your experience here at
East High School.
“There was a large increase in fights
during the 20-21 school year,” East
admin Anthony Gianaras said.
Because of the change in policy there
has been a “significant” decrease in
student altercations, which is welcome
news. Over the past two school years,
the number of fights has gone down so
much, and admins believe it’s because
students are being held more accountable.
“People are going to keep fighting either
way,” junior Reyna Fairman said.
While some think the policy will have
a positive impact on East, others think
that it won’t impact anything because
“fighting used to be a problem” but
recently fights haven’t been occurring as
much, at least not on school grounds.
“In the past students were suspended
between three to five days and allowed
to return to school. Now, the run the
risk of being placed in virtual learning,”
Gianaras said.
Not only can a student get removed
from in person school and switched to
virtual but now students can have 30,
60, or up to 90 days of school added
on. “They forfeit their right to be in
school because they are contributing to
an unsafe environment,” Gianaras said
