Moving from Texas to Iowa is a big change; you’re starting a new school, making new friends, and trying to figure out what the next two years will be like. Meet Karl Morris, a current senior, who came to East High as a junior. Morris is an ambitious student, a skilled athlete, and an amazing friend who tries his best at everything he does.
Morris describes his experiences and how the new change in his life was impacting him. At the beginning of his junior year at East, he wasn’t too excited about going to a new school and even expected the worst to happen.
“I expected it to be hectic, and to be alone during second year,” Morris said.
Morris was born and raised in Chicago for a majority of his life, then went from Chicago to Texas and stayed in Texas until 2024. Morris and his family moved to Iowa, and Morris explained that he enjoyed Texas very much, but the move from Texas impacted his life resulting in new feelings about moving.
“No, I don’t feel like I belong at East, moving to Iowa and coming to East just happened last minute,” Morris said.
Morris had always enjoyed playing sports, and his favorite sport is basketball. For Morris, basketball has always been there for him even through all the changes that have occurred in his life, even leading him to join in basketball and a few other sports such as golf, track, tennis, and weightlifting.
“Karl Morris worked as hard as anyone this season and showed dramatic improvement in his basketball skills and ability throughout the entire season,” basketball Coach EJ Nau said.
With all the improvement he has made this season, many of his teammates have started to notice his ability on the court. While off the court, he is said to be a great friend and student. Morris has some friends here at East and had a lot of close friends in Texas that he’d consider family.
“I had many friends there that I built such a tight bond with and got closer to their family to the point where I was actually getting treated like I was one of their parent’s kids and I loved that feeling and welcoming from my friends and their parents,” Morris said.
Over Morris’s two years of being at East, he had to face challenges that not many people have to go through, yet he still overcomes them by facing this fear and being the best version of himself. He is a great friend that many appreciate, a leader to his team and an amazing student that many teachers like for his humor, and his ability to work hard. “I plan on potentially going to college to become a nurse, if not a nurse, then therapist at Grand View maybe, if not Grandview then a school in Chicago,” Karl Morris said.
Karl Morris last senior words are very inspirational.
“Stay focused on your goals and don’t let anyone limit what you can achieve,” Karl Morris said.
